1837-1920. US novelist and editor. The `dean'
of US letters in the post-Civil War era, and
editor of The Atlantic Monthly, he championed
the realist movement in fiction and
encouraged many younger authors. He wrote 35
novels, 35 plays, and many books of poetry,
essays, and commentary. His novels, filled
with vivid social detail, include A Modern
Instance 1882 and The Rise of Silas Lapham
1885, about the social fall and moral rise of
a New England paint manufacturer, a central
fable of the `Gilded Age'.
